Lazy Picture Quiz Saturday

I spent an hour or so chipping ice off of a sidewalk yesterday, and as a consequence my fingers aren’t working quite as well as they usually do. Also, the rest of my arms. Here, instead, is my one-panel picture quiz, featuring Superboy’s robot pal Percy from Superboy No 9:

As for the quiz part: just who does that robot eerily resemble?

  1. Luzaire says:

    Darth Vader?

  2. Lance says:

I am Bender, please insert girder.

  3. Matt says:

An unholy combination of Bender and Homer Simpson?

  4. Stephen says:

Well based upon how you tagged the post…Chief Wiggum?

  5. Johnathan says:

    It was a red herring!

  6. Matt Bird says:

Yup, that looks like Bender, but have you seen the cover to Startling Comics #49?

That guy looks even more like Bender, right down to having one slit for two eyes. Surely this was an influence on the design.

  7. CalvinPitt says:

I’m also thinking Homer Simpson. It’s the nose, I think.

  8. Stephen says:

    @Johnathan

Have we ever discussed the Futurama/Magnus Robot Fighter connections? I’ve noticed we have very similar reading habits so I just assumed this had come up.

Pardon the redundancy if it applies.

Zapp Brannigan dresses like Magnus and Magnus’ lady friend in the comics is named Leeja. I’ll look through those Dark Horse collections later tonight to be sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find a Bender look alike somewhere in there.

  9. Esteban says:

I was also thinking of Homer and Bender… and then I thought it actually looks like the robot Mr. Burns put Homer’s brain in an early Halloween special.

    Certainly very Groenig, though.

  10. Johnathan says:

No, I hadn’t caught the Magnus/Zapp similarities before, but now that you mention it…

Man, I need to read more of those things. Sadly, there’s only so much Silver Age that one guy can read in the course of a week. Maybe I can get a grant.
